This is a guide to the principles of Magic Limited: 27 lessons, about 4.1 hours of reading, built to be read in order. It does not review sets and it does not rank cards. It teaches a method for judging them yourself.
Where should you start?
I am new to Limited
Start at the beginning. The first three lessons explain what a Limited environment is, what part luck actually plays, and the rule the rest of the guide is built on.
I play, but my results are inconsistent
Inconsistency is usually a deck that cannot reliably do what it was built to do. Start with the mana and cost chapters, then read the three types of synergy.
I want to judge cards better
The guide evaluates a card by how often it is useful and how useful it stays outside those conditions. One chapter sets out the method; six apply it to each card type.
I want to draft better
Drafting is covered in three parts: reading signals, judging how much a signal is worth at a given pick, and deciding when to commit to colours.
I want to practise, not read
The Practice Lab holds exercises built on the same method the chapters teach.
I mostly play Commander
The method travels: judging a card by how often it is useful, and how useful it stays when its conditions are missing, matters more in a singleton deck; so does the golden rule, that the player who uses more of their mana usually wins. What does not travel is reading draft signals, building a sealed pool, and the Mana chapter ceiling of eight mana.
The whole path
Each module builds on the one before it. Concepts are introduced once and reused throughout, so reading in order costs less effort than jumping in.
Module 1 · Foundations
What a Limited environment actually is, why it rewards skill rather than luck, and the single rule the rest of the guide is built on.
-
1
Prologue: How I became a limited MTG player 3 min
Why the author has played Limited for over twenty years, and why this guide exists.
-
2
MTG, Play it limited! 7 min
What separates Limited from Constructed: which deck archetypes each format produces, and the two distinct kinds of randomness — operational and play-setting.
-
3
MTG's golden rule 17 min
The Mana Exploitation Score (MES): how much of the mana available to you actually gets converted into effect, and the factors — curve, mana sinks, card advantage — that raise or lower it.
Module 2 · Resources
The three currencies you spend every game — mana, cards and life — and what each one really costs.
-
4
Mana 14 min
Mana as a resource that is scarce early and abundant late: casting speed, mana complexity, accelerators, the curve, and how all of it produces tempo.
-
5
Cost in MTG Cards 9 min
Every spell costs a card as well as mana. When surrendering a card genuinely hurts, when it does not, and why card advantage sits at the centre of the game.
-
6
MTG Life Cost 8 min
Life as a third payment method: how tempting it is, how much control you have over the payment, and why the same price gets more dangerous as the game goes on.
Module 3 · Card Evaluation
The heart of the guide. A test you can run on any card — how often it is useful, and how many situations it fits — then applied, group by group, to every major card type in Limited.
-
7
Stable versus Situational Cards 12 min
The central evaluation tool: frequency and flexibility, and the two axes — time mode and action mode — that determine when a card is actually worth casting.
-
8
Creatures 15 min
Why creatures are the most stable group in Limited: their cost in mana and cards, the power/toughness ratio, evasion abilities, and drawbacks.
-
9
Removals 9 min
Removal measured against MES, against its cost in cards, and against the stability tests — ending in four distinct types of removal.
-
10
MTG Finishers 4 min
The cards that end games: expensive, situational by definition, and still worth a slot — under conditions this chapter sets out.
-
11
Combat Tricks 8 min
Cards played inside the combat phase, and the four roles they can fill: removal, finisher, anti-removal tech, and trick proper.
-
12
Creature Boosters 4 min
Sorcery-speed pumps, auras and equipment — three archetypes that look similar and score very differently.
-
13
Life Gainers 3 min
Gaining life as a way of buying time — and when buying time is, and is not, worth the card it costs.
Module 4 · Synergy
Why a pile of strong cards is not a deck. Three kinds of synergy, each solving a different problem.
-
14
MTG Functional Synergy 12 min
The strategic idea that makes cards work together, the character of the colour pie, and five strategic ideas typical of a Limited environment.
-
15
Operational Synergy 12 min
Aimed at the most frustrating problem in the game — unusable cards in hand. Land counts, accelerators, and the art of mana fixing.
-
16
Mechanical Synergy 4 min
Set mechanics such as Madness, Affinity and Storm: the most powerful form of synergy, and the least forgiving.
Module 5 · Limited Formats
Everything so far, applied inside the two formats where you actually build a deck: Draft and Sealed.
-
17
The Art of MTG Drafting, Part I 9 min
What a draft is, how players choose, and the art of signalling — the shared language that makes cooperation at the table possible.
-
18
The Art of Drafting, Part II 17 min
Late pick versus early pick, with sub-methods for each, and how conservative and gambler’s strategies combine them.
-
19
The Art of Drafting, Part III 7 min
The three types of synergy applied inside a live draft, plus practical advice for the format.
-
20
The Secrets of Sealed, Part I 10 min
Building from a fixed pool: the tension between card quality and consistency, choosing colours, and when expensive cards become playable.
-
21
The Secrets of Sealed, Part II 7 min
Practical deck-building under a clock: main colours, the splash, and using the sideboard.
Module 6 · Playing the Game
The deck is built. These chapters treat play itself as a craft, borrowing the principles of war and testing them against the board.
-
22
MTG Initial Decision 11 min
Play or draw, potential tempo versus actual tempo, and how to judge a mulligan by hand size and land ratio.
-
23
The Craft of Playing, Part I 9 min
Adjustment and the inertia problem — recognising the moment the game changes mode — followed by resourcefulness and calculated risk.
-
24
The Craft of Playing, Part II 8 min
Initiative, concentration of efforts, reserve and security — four principles that regularly pull against one another.
-
25
The Craft of Playing, Part III 15 min
Intelligence, cunning, flexibility and coolness — including the traps of emotion and sunk costs.
Practice Lab
Once the method is in place, use it. This section was written for anyone teaching Limited — a full semester of exercises — and works equally well as self-testing.
-
26
MTG Exercises 12 min
The written syllabus for a classroom: eleven exercises, one per week, each drilling a specific concept from the guide. Sixteen of them have also been built to play in the browser.
