Practice: Opening Hands

Practice · opening hands

Under the London Mulligan you draw seven cards every time. Decide whether to keep, and when you keep after a mulligan, decide which cards go to the bottom.

The method, in short
  • Every hand is seven cards. A mulligan does not deal you fewer; it deals you seven again and asks you to put cards back.
  • Step 1 — what can this hand do, and when. Count the lands, check the colours, and find the first turn the hand does something.
  • Step 2 — what would it look like after bottoming. At one mulligan you are choosing six of these seven, at two you are choosing five.
  • The cost of going again. It rises with every mulligan, which lowers the bar without removing it. A hand still needs a plausible way to function.

This drill applies the method from MTG Initial Decision.
